On 8 October 1968, in a letter addressed to Robert Rouleau, secretary to Mgr. Jean-Marie Fortier, Louis-Napoléon Audet, architect, writes « Construction of the cathedral started in 1915, the second year of the First World War, and His Excellency states that it was in part to create jobs. Two pieces of machinery were brought on-site : a compressor to carve the stone and a crusher». He continues « Work was under the supervision of Mr. Omer Bonin, from Sherbrooke, and carving of the stone was done by Mr. Gaudiose Plamondon, both excellent laborers. Over a long period, the rock was cut out from the site of the future cathedral, and the stone extracted was used for concrete and for raising the walls ».
